FOPHL

We're glad you're here and hope you'll join us in our positive and pro-active campaign to revive this spectacular lake. It will take time and effort to be sure, but we feel strongly that the work is well worth our commitment.

In the past, this jewel of Schenley Park provided year-round outdoor experiences for many: fishing, ice skating, boating, picnicking, nature walks, leisurely strolls, family outings and much more. Presently, the Lake is in shabby condition and given its rich history, this must change. We want to be the catalyst to make that change happen.

For many years, there has been a park-wide plan concentrating on watershed management of PHL's feeder systems. But the Lake itself isn't receiving the attention it so desperately deserves and needs so long as other peripheral locations remain the focus.

Currently, the Lake is in deplorable shape. PHL is losing its never-ending battle with silt, and the build-up at the mouth of its feeder streams is breeding a marsh-like setting for plants to thrive. These reeds, shrubs, trees and other vegetation are thriving a little too hardily and their delta now covers the eastern end of the Lake. To make matters worse, the Lake has lost half or more or its 10' depth because of sedimentation.

Aside from the needed immediate work on the lake, a long term plan to regularly schedule routine maintenance is required. Also on the to-do list is a resolution of long-standing access problems. The Lake is on the "wrong side" of the CSX tracks and doesn't have a convenient park-and-walk entry point.

You can help. Support The Friends of Panther Hollow Lake as advocates for Lake restoration. Help make the Panther Hollow Lake a destination point again, beginning with your own visit. Talk it up with friends and family.  Let the City know that the Lake isn't a forgotten asset.
